Metro State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, is seeking to hire up to two urban teacher education faculty (rank to be determined based on experience and credentials). These are full-time, probationary positions within the School of Urban Education and will start on August 15, 2024.

Job Description:

General Responsibilities for Both Faculty-Program Coordinator Positions:

The Faculty-Program Coordinators are expected to:

  • Demonstrate effectiveness in teaching urban teacher education courses to a diverse, contemporary student population and contribute to meaningful assessment of student learning.
  • Coordinate, specifically manage and guide one or more degree and licensure programs (Note: This required coordinating responsibility occurs through a reduced teaching load).
  • Facilitate decision-making activities with partnerships that are integral to supporting and strengthening existing and new programs.
  • Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research.
  • Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.
  • Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.
  • Engage in service to the university and community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student body by delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that support equitable outcomes for all students.
  • Work regularly from campus to collaborate, meet and engage with colleagues and students in person while also working remotely at times.

Specific Responsibilities of the Urban Secondary Education Faculty-Program Coordinator Position

The successful candidate for this combined position is also expected to:

  • Manage effectively and grow the various elements of undergraduate and graduate Urban Secondary Education teacher preparation programs leading to licensure in Communication Arts & Literature, Life/General Science, Mathematics and Social Studies. (Note: This required coordinating responsibility occurs through a reduced teaching load).
  • Evaluate transfer student transcripts and graduate application materials to determine equivalencies with licensure program requirements and program admission decisions.
  • Collaborate to develop with colleagues in the College of Liberal Arts and College of Sciences that house undergraduate content majors for secondary teaching, and colleagues in the School of Urban Education.
  • Additional opportunities also exist to direct and manage the M.S. Urban Education graduate program with a reduced teaching load.


Specific Responsibilities of the Urban E-12 Education Faculty-Program Coordinator Position

The successful candidate for this combined position is also expected to:

  • Manage effectively and grow the various elements of one or more of the following degree or licensure programs within the School of Urban Education: Urban Early Childhood Education, Urban Elementary Education, and/or Urban Special Education. (Note: This required coordinating responsibility occurs through a reduced teaching load).
  • Evaluate transfer student transcripts to determine equivalencies with licensure program requirements.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the School of Urban Education and other departments at the University.
  • Additional opportunities also exist to direct and manage the M.S. Urban Education graduate program with a reduced teaching load.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:


  • For appointment at the assistant level, a minimum of a doctorate OR all but dissertation completed in a doctoral program in Education or related field. (Dissertation must be successfully completed within 1 year after appointment begins.). For appointment at the associate level, a doctorate in Education or related field and at least five years of collegiate teaching is required. For appointment at the full professor level, a doctorate in Education or related field and at least eight years of collegiate teaching is required having already been promoted to the associate level.).
  • Experience teaching in urban, preK-12 schools.
  • Demonstrated ability for success in teaching and professional service activities.
  • A plan for scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research in the specified discipline(s), or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively in an institution with a culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse faculty, staff and student population.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:   

  • Doctorate in Urban Education, Education, Curriculum & Instruction or closely related field. 
  • At least 3 years licensed experience teaching in preK-12 schools within the U.S.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at a post-secondary level.
  • Experience leading an academic program at a post-secondary level.
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, communication, and collaboration skills needed to effectively manage, grow and support the continuous development of existing and new academic programs in the School of Urban Education.
  • Experience developing course curricula and standards-based assessments at a post-secondary institution.
  • Expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, and/or universal design.
  • Experience advising undergraduate and/or graduate students seeking to complete a teacher licensing program.
  • Experience advising and supporting graduate students to complete their thesis or dissertation.
  • Proficiency using technology, including software and online tools, to communicate with clarity, teach and complete work in a timely manner.
