Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities: 

The role of our teachers will focus on instilling a love of learning. The First Grade teacher fosters children’s curiosity and innate desire to learn and understand the world around them. They create a secure environment to support learning and assist children with their growing independence. Teachers must be flexible, creative, engaging, and establish freedom within structure. The First Grade teacher reports to the Lower and Middle School Division or Assistant Division Director.

The position’s preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in elementary education. A graduate degree and a track record of successful teaching at the early elementary level are preferred 
  • Firm understanding of academic, social, and emotional development of young learners
  • Innovative mindset with strong skills in communication, collaboration, project-based learning, and technology 
  • Experience with the EL Education ELA curriculum and Bridges in Math curriculum
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to influence and engage students, colleagues, and families and build long term relationships

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the Lower School Teacher position:

The First Grade teacher will need to create a positive and vibrant learning environment for a class of 12-15 students. The preferred candidate will have a strong desire to see their craft improve and evolve. The ideal candidate will possess a growth mindset and share their expertise openly with others. The First Grade teacher will be able to kneel, crouch, work at a table/desk, and transition to and from the floor to work with students and may be required to lift up to 20 pounds.

The First Grade teacher candidate will:

  • Shape the lives of children by using best teaching practices
  • Collaborate effectively with co-teacher and other colleagues
  • Use variety, creativity, and flexibility to motivate and inspire young learners
  • Teach reading, writing, math, science, and social studies
  • Plan interdisciplinary units of study using project-based curriculum that inspires children to investigate and research
  • Plan, implement, and assess outdoor education experiences including overnight expeditions
  • Facilitate social-emotional learning using elements of Yale’s RULER program
  • Facilitate the development of a positive class culture that supports learning and personal growth using elements of  Responsive Classroom 
  • Collaborate with the Learning Support Coordinator to support students with unique and diverse learning needs
  • Provide regular and specific student feedback and maintain assessment records
  • Communicate with students and families regularly
  • Know the developmental and academic abilities of one’s students
  • Effectively coordinate with co-curricular teachers (PE, drama, art, music, Spanish, library, choir, and band)
  • Perform various student supervisory duties. 
  • Adhere to the standards described in the Employee Handbook. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head or Associate Head of School. 

SALARY RANGE: $39,00 to $52,000 annually based upon skills and experience, excellent benefits package.
