Job Summary: Under close supervision, the Orientation and Transition Coordinator will work collaboratively to implement new student orientations (both in-person and online), welcome week activities, strengthen relationships with community partners in neighboring school districts to create a college-going pipeline and create tutorials aimed at helping new students navigate the registration process and other aspects of higher education. As a member of the OSS team, this coordinator will develop leadership and professional skills while employed and benefit from being part of a caring team environment that fosters growth.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties: Student Onboarding and Success Initiatives:
  • Orient new students and their families to the academic and social environment at SLCC, including important college policies and procedures, academic areas of study, engagement opportunities, as well as campus and community resources.
  • Work with faculty, staff, and peer leaders to advance the retention, success, and completion goals of OSS and Salt Lake Community College.
  • Assist in coordinating welcome events and programs with other college departments and personnel.
  • Work with OSS staff and partners in area high schools to increase the enrollment and success of their students at SLCC.
  • Create enrollment tutorials and trainings for students and staff across the college.
  • Assist students with questions regarding the enrollment process, course placement, course modalities, navigating MySLCC and Canvas, pending financial aid requirements, and other college policies and procedures.
  • Troubleshoot errors and work with campus partners to ensure a smooth delivery of SLCC’s online platforms (e.g., MySLCC, DegreeWorks, the SLCC Website, etc.).
  • Communicate information with campus and community partners clearly and effectively.
  • Work with the OSS team to update scripts and videos used for the online orientation.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, functionality, and ambiance of the registration lab.
  • Participate in other departmental activities and duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree (or 60 credit hours completed), preferably in education, educational psychology, sociology, communications, ethnic studies, or related field OR a high school diploma with two years related work experience.
  • This is an entry-level position and related experience is not required but preferred.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will go to candidates who demonstrate:Proficient in computer literacy and digital navigational skills.Professionalism in manner and appearance.Bilingual or multilingual ability.Familiarity or involvement with SLCC services, resources, or student organizations.One ore more years related experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: An OSS Coordinator must:Motivate, encourage, mentor, and teach new students how to navigate higher education.Create a welcoming environment for new students and their families.Demonstrate a personal commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice.Demonstrate initiative, creativity, teamwork, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.Articulate the purpose of general education classes and teach students how to register for these courses.Feel comfortable using technology.Be dependable, have excellent organizational skills, and pay close attention to details.Participate in ongoing professional development sessions.Candidate should possess the ability to:Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of diverse individuals.Deliver high-quality presentations and lead discussions with large and small groups of students in new student orientations or classrooms with high enrollments of first-year students.Provide excellent customer service and, when necessary, provide one-on-one consultations.Work collaboratively with others in the team, as well as our campus partners.Organize, process and disseminate large amounts of information accurately.Learn the requirements of SLCC services, major prerequisites, programs and degree options, as well as college resources and processes (e.g., admissions, registration, financial aid, placement, and orientation).Determine the needs of new students and collaborate with others to develop and implement services to meet their needs, including orientation programs, transition activities, and new student tutorials.Work well under pressure and function independently with integrity.Utilize basic computer operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Office Word, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SLCC’s student information system (i.e., Banner)Prioritize assignments, plan and carry projects to completion.Learn quickly, work well under pressure, and work ethically with confidential information.Advocate for all students with an emphasis on new students.Work a flexible schedule, which may include mornings, evenings, and weekends.Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, abilities, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds to maintain good working relationships across the College.Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
